WINTER CLOTHING

Hi Folks,

Many students still come to school without a coat or for students in Gr. 3 or below, a hood/hat or mitts/gloves.  Mr. Lasso escorts them up to their classrooms to fetch their items or found items to borrow in the office.  Again please ensure that you visibly check your children (have them put their hands up to show you) BEFORE they come to school.

I’ve already spoken to some of you and I appreciate your attention to it.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Our Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up next week, on Thursday, November 15^th in the evening, and Friday, November 16^th in the morning.  To help with scheduling of our conferences, please indicate your preferred time to come in and meet with me. I will try to honour your time requests. The interviews for both grade 2 and 3 will be 'parents and teacher' only, so we can discuss your children in an open way.

          Please fill out the portion that was emailed to you by the class representative and indicate your preferences for timing, first, second and third choice. Please return the email by Tuesday November 13th

Grade 3 - Century School House Trip

The Grade 3 Students will be going to the Century SchoolHouse, Sammon and Coxwell, on Tuesday November 13th.  We have been talking about the trip in our Class as part of our Social Science studies.  I have sent home with your children today, a small booklet of information regarding our trip.  In the booklet there is information on the dress code, lunch menu and a history of the Century SchoolHouse.  Inside there is also the words to God Save our Queen.  We are practicing them at school, but I am hoping that you can sing the words with your children at home as well. 

The field trip form will be coming home shortly.

Torontonian Hamid Gahssemi-Shall was visiting his sick mother in Iran when he was charged with being a spy and thrown into Tehran's infamous Evin prison. That was in 2008. Hamid has now been sentenced to death. When 13 year old Beatrice Perusse learned about this story, she decided to take action. She made a movie, 'Free Hamid'. She joined CBC'S Here and Now along with Hamid's wife Antonella Mega.

Stone Soup the Aftermath

THANK YOU THANK YOU

Thanks so much for those mums and dads that dropped by this morning to cut, chop, grate, and mutilate vegetables with the Area 40 Students.  We had a blast.  Thanks also to all those parents who donated veggies!  The soup was a hit. 

At 2:30pm this afternoon we headed out into our Sukah to enjoy our Stone Soup.  Accompanied by homemade cornbread.  It was a little windy, so there may have been a little dust in our soup as well but it did not dampen our spirits.  Maryem's family also joined us for our feast. 

We ended the day with brownies and giggles.

Stone Soup - Friday October 5th

Hi Everyone,

On Friday, October 5th, we are having our Stone Soup Feast! We will be cutting, preparing and then sharing delicious soup together, from 9:00 - 11:45. 

Come and help us! We need many volunteers to help the kids cut and prepare the soup in the morning.  Come and share the soup with us!!

The kids do not know about this yet! Next week I will be telling many different versions of the story of Stone Soup to get us all excited. Then we will decide together what vegetables everyone will bring in.

There is some equipment that we need. If you have any of the following items that you can donate for the morning, please let me know!

We will need: 

- 2 large soup pots

- 1 hot plate with 2 burners or 2 single burners

- knives for cutting

- cutting boards

- metal mixing bowls

- small bowls for the soup

- class set of spoons

- graters

And then there is dessert!  I am looking for someone who has a knowledge of gluetin free, dairy free and low-to-no sugar baking. Perhaps a pumpkin spice muffin, or baked apples recipe that we could also make and share on the day. If you have suggestions for a good recipe,  and/or could help with baking, bringing in equipment and supplies, please let me know.

This is always such a wonderful tradition in our class, and such a wonderful way to celebrate the harvest. Come and join us!

Homework

Dear Parents,

I wanted to write to you about my policy about homework in grade 3.  I generally do not give out homework at all, but in certain situations, if the children are not able to complete something in class, I will send it home so they have an opportunity to do it at home.  This will be the case, most often, in math. 

We are working out of "Jump" Math books, as well as lesson plans where children are learning to use problem solving skills.  We will also be using math in our larger projects, such as in building and gardening.

I will not send any homework this week, but as we are moving forward in our JUMP math, there are some children who may need more time to work on the problems.  I want to try, as much as possible, to help all of the children to keep up, so starting the week of September 24th, if there are children who need to catch up on some of the pages, I will allow them to take their books home between Monday and Thursday (but they need to remember to bring them back Every Day).  Each week, I will let you know what pages and questions we have covered to date, and I would recommend spending no more than 20 minutes on it.  I will not send the books home on Friday because I believe strongly that the children need a chance to have a break from school.

This event which was recently moved to next week has to be moved to the following week due to a scheduling error that placed it on a religious holiday – Mr. Lasso apologizes for his scheduling mistake.  The event will still be a modified presentation in the gym without classroom visits which have been postponed. Curriculum information will be sent home over the next week.  If you have specific questions, please do contact your child’s teacher.

School to Home Communication

As soon as the information flow slows, you may expect a newsletter from the school approximately every two weeks.  From time to time there will also be letters, flyers, pamphlets and the like on specific topics.  Contact may also be made with administration through a note, phone call or email (please limit the # sent each day) but please allow at least 48 hours for a reply as the volume has increased significantly due to the start-up, new programs, reorganization and the learning curve for a principal in two new schools.

Lunch Program

Our lunch program has undergone some changes this year all geared towards providing a more enjoyable and safe environment.  Students are remaining in their seats unless with permission, given ample time to eat their lunch and transitioning outside in a much more orderly fashion.  Please review with your child(ren) that they must eat lunch in our lunchroom unless you have given written permission to the school for them to leave to eat elsewhere.  Students in Gr. 3 or below and leaving for lunch MUST be picked up and supervised by a responsible adult.  Students with permission to leave for lunch are the responsibility of their parents/guardians and should not return to the school until close to 12:30 p.m. especially during inclement weather.

Cross-Country Running

School team try-outs, practices and meets have been postponed for the time being.  We will share any changes or updates with our community as they occur.

Terry Fox School Run Day

This year marks the 32^nd anniversary of the Terry Fox Run.  To honour our Canadian hero, EHAS and RPS students will be running on September 27th (National School Run Day) to raise money for cancer research.  Please do not forget to bring your “twoonie” for Terry.

HEAD LICE (PEDICULOSIS) CLASS LETTER

To:       Parents/Guardians

Re:  Head Lice (Pediculosis)

A case of Head Lice (Pediculosis) has been found to exist in your child’s classroom.  The head louse is an insect that lives and breeds on your head.  This is a common occurrence in school aged children.  It is spread directly by head to head contact and indirectly by contact with his/her personal belongings.  These include clothing, hair accessories and head gear.

We ask that you take the following precautions:

1.                  Inspect your child’s hair and scalp frequently for the next 10 days.  The louse may be brown or grayish, with a flat, wingless body 1-2 mm in length with six legs.  The eggs may be yellow, brown, or white teardrop-shaped, are glued to the hair near the scalp and are called “nits”.  It is usually the eggs which are first noticed.

2.                  If your child complains of an itchy scalp, you should check for lice and/or nits.  Some children do not experience an itchy scalp.

3.                  If you discover your child has lice or nits, please notify the school right away and a Public Health Head Lice (Pediculosis) Fact Sheet will be sent home.

4.                  Please note that if a child is found to have head lice (pediculosis), the parent or guardian will be required to keep the child at home until the child is free of all head lice and nits.

Where else can you find a 468 hectare park, a rare meromictic lake (where layers of water do not intermix) and a 15th century reconstructed Iroquoian Village? Located near Milton and nestled in a spectacular section of the Niagara Escarpment, Crawford Lake Conservation Area invites you to come and explore this living, breathing classroom.

Grade 2

TELLABRATIONS
Through imaginative and interactive storytelling techniques students learn about the importance of spoken word traditions and celebration among First Nations people. Activities include: Interactive storytelling, longhouse exploration and fire starting, craft making.

Grade 3
LIFE IN THE LONGHOUSE- 1.5 hours
Students discover Ontario's rich First Nation's heritage as they explore a 15th century reconstructed Iroquoian Village. Hands-on opportunities abound as students engage in games, a village tour and longhouse exploration as they learn about what life was like in a longhouse village over 600 years ago. Activities include: Longhouse exploration, circle gathering and fire starting, multimedia presentation, native games and take home craft activity.

Equinox Holistic Alternative School

Hello Parents and Guardians

Welcome everyone.  It is back to school time again!  This year your child is in the Grade 2/3 class in Area 40 with 20 children.  If this past week has been any indication, we WILL be having a great year.

With is an introductory letter, I am sending home the September calendar.  This calendar indicates all the field trips that are planned as well as all the special events.  The calendar also indicates the Gym and Music periods that Area 40 will be having.  Gym and music will be taught by Philip this year.  Day 1, Music and Gym, Day 2 Music, Day 3 Gym, Day 4 Gym, Day 5 Music and Gym.  The library and computer s chedule still needs to be arranged.

Students that go home for lunch will be dismissed at 11:45am.  At the end of the day all of the children will be dismissed at 3:30pm.  Both dismissals will be at the Ashdale doors.  Students are expected to be matched up with a parent or caregiver before leaving the school.  The children must give me a High 5 when they see the person picking them up.  This gives me the security of eye contact with the child and a verbal verification that they have a safe pick up.

It would be a big help if your child had a water bottle at school at all times.  This reduces interruptions during lessons and congestion at the drinking fountain.  Students can fill their bottles at the sink first thing in the morning.  I would encourage them to bring them home frequently for washing.  I have also asked that indoor shoes be brought to school.  The shoes will be used in the school as well for gym on rainy days as well as during the winter months.  If the children do not have proper running shoes for gym they will be asked to participate in bare feet for safety reasons.

Periodically I will be sending home flyers for Scholastic Book Clubs.  I will order books for those who are interested.  Cheques should be made out to Scholastic.  I will also take cash orders.  As well the librarian will hold the occasional book fairs throughout the year.

It would be helpful if you could send in material scraps into the class room as we will be using them for a major art project this fall.

As well, I have developed a class blog.  It contains all the important dates and events that are happening in Area 40.  It can be found at  www.makineducation.blogspot.com.  It is a continual work-in-progress.  Some of your children’s work will be posted as well.  The blog also contains websites for both students and parents.  If you have something to share please let me know and I will post it as well.  I would like to keep open communication with you through your child’s agenda.  Please feel free to write me notes and inquiries in the margins.  I check the agendas each day.  Please make sure that you read the agenda each evening to make sure that you keep abreast of Area 40’s happenings.
